> Predictable but enjoyable Chinese-American comedy.
In this good-natured comedy, unemployed Christopher “C-dub” Wang (co-writer Jimmy Tsai) dreams of becoming a basketball superstar, wearing jerseys and using street slang. However, when his responsible brother Michael (Roger Fan) becomes injured, C-dub must take Michael’s place in the upcoming ping pong tournament and save his family’s business from a menacing rival. Though wholly predictable, Ping Pong Playa is an enjoyable Chinese-American twist on the plot of slackers who are forced to face responsibility and ultimately succeed.
Shelf Talk: Image is touting the film’s release date as near Chinese New Year, targeting its intended audience. Also mention this one to those who enjoyed such ping pong-focused comedies as Christopher Walken’s Balls of Fury.
