Explosions, superheroes fighting and trucks flying through the air—what more could a Blu-ray fan want? Hancock looks and sounds pristine in high-def, and the extra footage in the unrated version will keep viewers laughing. Seven featurettes detail every aspect of the production. One of the most interesting is on set design, with set decorator Rosemary Brandenburg giving a tour of all the small objects in Mary’s house that represent her backstory. The best part of the specials package is the Blu-ray-exclusive picture-in-picture on-set video diary, which shows behind-the-scenes footage of the scene that’s playing in the movie. It would be wonderful if users could sometimes have the diary playing fullscreen and the movie in the small picture, but either way, it’s fascinating and fun.
Shelf Talk: With Will Smith, superheroes and $228 million in box-office receipts, Hancock is primed to do well in the home market. The Blu-ray version is only $5 more than the two-DVD set. So, unless consumers prefer the $11 cheaper single-disc, Blu-ray might be the winner.
