> British wife contemplates disposing of her stuffy hubby in this true-crime period piece.
A true-crime murder case from the ’20s is transformed into a full-blown soap opera in this high-toned and well-acted but predictable 2001 British feature. Julianne Moore lookalike Natasha Little plays Edith Thompson, a woman who corresponds at length with her dream-boy lover (Ioan Gruffudd of Fantastic Four) about ways in which they could do in her stuffy husband (Nick Moran of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), but she refuses to divorce him because of the social mores of the time. As Another Life begins with the husband’s murder, the film’s only mystery is whether our heroine will be nabbed as an accomplice—and how long it will take viewers to scream “just divorce him, already!” at the TV screen.
Shelf Talk: Women viewers who enjoy BBC productions and doomed-romance scenarios are the target audience for Another Life. Gruffudd and Moran supply a bit of marquee value for U.S. consumers, but the film’s story line and period glamour should be the selling points.
