Monterey's Whale doc focuses on Unity and Peace

By Wendy Wilson -- Video Business, 9/25/2008 4:19:00 PM

Whaledreamers explores the connection between whales, dolphins and humans.

Monterey Media’s Nov. 4 release of the documentary Whaledreamers (prebook Oct. 7; DVD $19.95) will serve as the focal point for the 2nd Annual Weekend of Unity and Peace, a collection of grassroots gatherings to raise awareness for environmental and social justice concerns.

Featuring the music of Julian Lennon, Whaledreamers explores the spiritual connection between whales, dolphins and humans. The film won Best Documentary at the Toronto Film Festival.

This year’s Weekend of Unity and Peace events are set for Oct. 24-26. Monterey managing partner Jere Rae-Mansfield said the company is expecting the support of a number of conservation groups including Greenpeace, Global Green, Climate Friendly, IFAW and Save the Whales.

“My goal was to use a film every year to help the people across the United States to have some kind of catalyst that would focus them on the goals of unity and peace,” Rae-Mansfield said. “Whaledreamers is exactly what we were looking for in that film—it’s not preachy, but it shares the awe and inspiration that we should all have for Mother Nature.”

In keeping with the film’s environmental themes, Monterey is offering the title in two packaing options, an Amaray case designed with a post-consumer waste wrap and an Eco Digi-Pack made entirely of recyclable materials and post-consumer waste. The majority of the marketing and publicity outreach for the film will be handled electronically, with publicity screeners being sent out on a request basis.

Monterey Media sponsors a Web site to allow prospective hosts of a Weekend of Unity and Peace event to register and obtain materials to help promote their screenings of Whaledreamers. The site also offers tips on how to make the event most successful.

“People can design these events around their own demographic,” Rae-Mansfield explained. “Some of the things that we suggest are creating a greater awareness for recycling and recycling programs and bake sales to benefit charities. This year, it will be for the greener charities. [Organizers] can also reach out to the environmentally conscious groups and businesses so that they can help enlighten the people so that they can find the resources that they need.”

Last year, Monterey’s DVD release of 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama provided the centerpiece for the inaugural Weekend of Unity and Peace.
