I Want Candy

By Irv Slifkin -- Video Business, 9/1/2008

MAGNOLIA
Street: Sept. 9
Prebook: now
> Zippy British film chronicles a carnal production.

A couple of neophytes gets involved in making a porno movie—a concept that has certainly been done before (The Amateurs) and is due again very soon (Kevin Smith’s upcoming Zack and Miri Make a Porno). But the immensely likable I Want Candy carves out its own little niche because, a) it’s British; and b) it’s inventive and genuinely funny. Film students Joe (Tom Riley) and Baggy (Tom Burke) get their chance to a make a movie when mobsters offer them financing if they can land American adult actress Candy Fiveways (a blonde Carmen Electra). With help from a female pal (Michelle Ryan of TV’s canceled Bionic Woman) and fellow students, they shoot their XXX epic at Joe’s parents’ house, and hilarious complications often ensue. A mix of fresh and familiar faces, a lively script and a little nudity go a long way here, which could make viewers want Candy based on recommendations.

Shelf Talk: Curvy Electra, who is featured in sexy under-garments on the packaging, is the chief selling point for this title, which didn’t receive a theatrical release in the U.S. (She’s followed closely by the lovely Ryan, who picked up a substantial following even though her show was canceled.) Though the plot screams “male only,” there’s enough sweetness afoot to interest couples and British filmgoers who like their comedies light and spicy.

Comedy, color, R (language, sexual situations, brief nudity), 87 min., DVD $28.98
Extras: featurette, deleted scenes
