Finding Amanda

By Irv Slifkin -- Video Business, 9/1/2008

MAGNOLIA
Street: Sept. 16
Prebook: now
> Two attitudes are better than one in this oddball addiction farce.

Witty and wry, even in the face of serious issues, the feature directing debut of A-list writer Peter Tolan (TV’s Rescue Me, Analyze This) will leave some uncomfortable with its approach to addiction, sex and moral values. Matthew Broderick is in fine form as a TV writer recovering from gambling and drinking addictions who decides to win points with his wife (Maura Tierney) by heading to Las Vegas to rescue his niece (Brittany Snow) from a life of prostitution and drugs. But what he encounters in Vegas is her laidback attitude about her lifestyle. Sarcastic dialog and nifty support by Steve Coogan and Peter Facinelli make this an interesting satire of personality dysfunctions run amuck.

Shelf Talk: Broderick’s name still attracts a strong DVD following, which should help this title, especially following its critically acclaimed limited theatrical release. Also, Snow has garnered fans from her turns in Prom Night and Hairspray. Magnolia is looking for some exposure on the Web and elsewhere.

Comedy, color, R (language, sexual situations, drug use), 87 min., DVD $26.98
Extras: director’s commentary, deleted scenes
Director: Peter Tolan
