Morningstar enters U.S. home entertainment market

Garbage Warrior, Smurfs in Canadian supplier's first slate

By Cindy Spielvogel -- Video Business, 8/19/2008

AUG. 19 | Canadian home entertainment company Morningstar Entertainment has entered the U.S. market.

The company’s initial U.S. releases will include Garbage Warrior (street Nov. 11, prebook Oct. 7; DVD $24.98), a documentary about a man who builds self-sustaining green communities, and The Smurfs and the Magic Flute (street Oct. 7, prebook Sept. 2; DVD $19.98), timed to the 50th anniversary of the blue children's characters.

“Having firmly established ourselves in the Canadian market, we have now set our sights on the larger-scale U.S. home entertainment marketplace,” said Jason Moring, VP of sales and acquisitions for Morningstar.

Other recent acquisitions include the fantasy drama Heydey from Gordon Pinsent, the comedy Little Big Top starring Sid Haig and Fat Head, a documentary that responds to the 2004 film Super Size Me.

Morningstar has more than 50 titles ready for U.S. distribution. It plans to release 10 per month, with three or four especially suited for the rental market.
