Made of Honor

> Attractive, appealing stars boost formulaic rom-com.

Engaged to a hunky Scottish nobleman (Kevin McKidd), art restorer Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) asks her male best friend—handsome, successful ladies’ man Tom (Patrick Dempsey)—to defy gender expectations and be her maid of honor. Naturally, the prospect of seeing her go to another man causes Tom to realize his love for Hannah. The movie’s third act mostly unfolds in and around a picturesque Scottish castle, and it climaxes with the requisite confession of love in a humiliatingly public setting. Although Dempsey and Monaghan don’t have particularly great chemistry together, separately, they are immensely appealing performers whose fine work lifts this programmatic rom-com slightly above routine.

Shelf Talk: Rigid adherence to formula makes Made of Honor a thoroughly predictable genre offering with no outstanding qualities to promote. But with Grey’s Anatomy star Dempsey and the increasingly popular Monaghan (Mission: Impossible III) as the leads, this release will undoubtedly get more than the customary advertising support, and business should be quite brisk at the outset.

Romantic comedy, color, PG-13 (language, mild sexual situations), 101 min., DVD $28.96, BD $38.96
Extras: director’s commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes
