80 Minutes

By Ed Hulse -- Video Business, 8/11/2008

WELL GO USA
Street: Sept. 2
Prebook: now
> Competent enough knockoff of recent real-time thrillers.

Borrowing equally from Crank and the soon-to-be-released 88 Minutes, this derivative, German-made thriller stars Gabriel Mann as Alex North, a feckless man injected with a fast-acting poison—the antidote to which he’ll receive if he comes up with the $15,000 he owes the poisoner. With only 80 minutes to dig up the cash, the increasingly desperate Alex takes a long chance. It’s not easy to craft a convincing real-time thriller, and this grade-B effort doesn’t quite cut the mustard, owing to general weaknesses in the story, acting and direction. It’ll provide passable entertainment to undiscriminating viewers, but some will have trouble getting past the yarn’s familiarity.

Shelf Talk: The distributor promises reviews in upcoming issues of Reader’s Digest and Entertainment Weekly, along with a viral marketing campaign that will include banner ads, targeted e-mail blasts and exposure on Google, MySpace and YouTube. Don’t be surprised if customers confuse it with 88 Minutes, which streets Sept. 16.

Thriller, color, NR (mature themes, language, violence), 98 min., DVD $19.98
