Vampire Diary

By Ed Grant -- Video Business, 7/28/2008

MONARCH
Street: Aug. 26
Prebook: Aug. 4
> Goth vampires meet the real thing in this flashy yet emotional horror flick.

The real-life world of club-hopping goths who live as vampires (wearing fangs, dark makeup and even darker clothing) supplies the backdrop for this uneven but original horror outing. The plot concerns Holly (Morven Macbeth), who falls madly in love with her new friend Vicki (Anna Walton of Hellboy II: The Golden Army), who just happens to be an actual vampire and is pregnant. The film is interesting and fun when its lead duo are new to the relationship and trying to hide traces of Vicki’s vampirism, but it becomes anti-climactic once the pregnancy angle is introduced.

Shelf Talk: Goths and vampire fan-addicts will welcome or reject Vampire Diary’s depiction of their scene. One thing is certain: male viewers will enjoy the attractive, frequently undressed vamps on display throughout—even enough to sit through the vampire-baby plot twist.

Horror, color, R (mature themes, sexual situations, violence), 90 min., DVD $24.95
