Korn: Live at Montreux Blu-ray

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 7/21/2008

EAGLE ROCK
Street: Aug. 5
Prebook: now
> Korn fans will eat up the eye-popping stage antics and crystal clear sound.

Fans of Korn will get a kick out of the band’s Blu-ray debut, as many will be seeing lead singer Jonathan Davis’ tattoos in garish detail for the first time. But ultimately, the appeal of the disc will probably stay within that hard rock niche, as the high-definition concert thrills do become repetitive after the first several tracks. There are only so many times that synchronized jumping bodies or whirling rocker dreadlocks can visually mesmerize those who are unfamiliar with Korn’s nu metal. The audio is beautiful, and the disc supports a range of advanced formats, including Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround Sound, LPCM Stereo and Lossless DTS Master Audio 5.1. For Korn aficionados, the disc represents the best seats they’ll ever have at a concert—better than the front-row mosh pit—as songs pop with flying sweat and howling vocals.

Shelf Talk: Beyond a choice of advanced audio formats, there are no disc extras included. The most die-hard Korn fans likely already own the title on standard-def DVD, released in May, and they may need more of a boost than high-def video and audio to pick up this Blu-ray version. However, the disc is attractively priced at $24.98.

Music, color, NR (mature lyrics), 75 min., BD $24.98, reviewed on Sony BDP S300 on Samsung 37-inch HDTV with HDMI connection
