An appealing American remake of a 2003 French comedy, The Neighbor stars Matthew Modine as a divorced wannabe artist who refuses to give up his prized apartment to French neighbor Michele Laroque, who lives a floor below him. The two carry on a War of the Roses-type feud that gets nastier and nastier—until Modine is forced to ask Laroque to pretend to be his fiancée and accompany him to his ex-wife’s wedding. The set-up is familiar, but there’s freshness to the approach.
Shelf Talk: Modine, best known for his role in Full Metal Jacket, is the only recognizable name here. But his presence, a generic movie title and a lack of theatrical exposure won’t help much. Neighbor should be recommended to those who enjoyed such French comedies as My Best Friend and The Valet.
