> Cult Britcom is duly worshipped by American celebrities in this special set.
This three-disc collection of the cult Britcom boasts what must be a record number of tribute commentaries, supplied by the show creators in tandem with celebrity fans of the program. The rotating group of fans, who profess their love for the show and ramble onto other topics (from the Oscars to drugs on TV to breast-feeding), are Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, South Park’s Matt Stone, SNL’s Bill Hader, Patton Oswalt and Juno scripter Diablo Cody. The commentaries are certainly fun, but they and the many, many other supplements included here distract from Spaced itself, an endearingly low-key sitcom that accurately reproduces the lives and daydreams of two slacker roommates (Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes) and their mega-geek friends.
Shelf Talk: Shaun of the Dead was an excellent calling-card for director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg’s work here in the U.S., and Spaced has been properly targeted to the fan/geek demo with, among other promotions, a panel presentation at this year’s Comic-Con. The celebrity fan base commentary also will draw attention to the package. The series’ clever references to everything from Star Wars and The X-Files to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation will definitely increase the modest cult for the show on these shores.
