Tongue-in-cheek humor punctuates this DVD premiere sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s cult 1997 sci-fi epic. Writer/director Edward Neumeier (who scripted the original Troopers) picks up from the first film, reintroducing Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) as the one salvation for a group of stranded troopers threatened by the series’ menacing monster bugs. Mock commercials, news broadcasts and even a music video lead in well to the requisite high-camp melodrama and all-out bug battles.
Shelf Talk: The Troopers franchise may have little chance of ever playing in theaters again, but it has proven profitable on disc, with the preceding two features selling well and the animated series Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles becoming a fan favorite. The major lure for fans in this installment is the cast, particularly Van Dien and cult actresses Amanda Donohoe and Star Trek: Enterprise’s Vulcan sex symbol Jolene Blalock.
