Step Into Liquid Blu-ray

By Samantha Clark -- Video Business, 6/9/2008

LIONSGATE
Street: June 24
Prebook: now
> Surfing documentary should make a splash on high-def.

This film’s stunning footage of huge curling waves sadly lacks the crispness and color saturation of other Blu-ray releases, with grain dotting many scenes. Perhaps this was by choice, but it’s a shame the film’s amazing shots (filmed in Super 16mm and 24P HD video) are not more dynamic in high-definition. Still, Step Into Liquid is a fun, inspirational documentary for anyone even slightly interested in the culture that is surfing. The extras package offers pretty much the same roster as the 2004 DVD, except that earlier version has a second disc with a videogame and other interactive features. Too bad these DVD-ROM bonuses weren’t upgraded for Blu-ray.

Shelf Talk: Step Into Liquid’s fans will be stoked to get this high-def version. Director Dana Brown’s latest surfing flick, Highwater, is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in August.

Documentary, color, PG (language), 88 min., BD $29.99, reviewed on PlayStation 3 with 46-inch Sony Bravia and HDMI connection
Extras: commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes, interviews, music montages
Director: Dana Brown
First Run: L, Aug. 2003, $3.6 mil.
