Jaman offers high-def streams for free

Movies carry ads or available for $1.99 download

By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 5/15/2008

MAY 15 | Independent movie download service Jaman.com has begun offering ad-supported, high-definition movies for free online as part of its expanding movie service.

Jaman will stream 100 high-def films initially, including recent independent releases Cool from director Theo van Gogh and 2008 Sundance Audience Award winner Shake Hands With the Devil, plus such older films as Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant classic Charade.

Internet users can instantly stream the movies without downloading a video player, or for $1.99, they can buy an ad-free download of the film. The streams are playable on PCs, Macs and Linux systems and are available to viewers in the U.S., Europe, Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Jaman already sells and rents downloads of more than 3,000 independent and foreign films. In January, it inked a deal with TiVo to deliver movies to digital video recorder set-top players to allow users to watch on a TV.

“This development changes the marketplace for long-form content,” Jaman founder and CEO Gaurav Dhillon said of the new offerings. “By offering a free streaming media service along with our current rental and ownership download options, we are anticipating the future of digital cinema.”
