For the Bible Tells Me So

By Mekado Murphy -- Video Business, 1/28/2008

FIRST RUN

Street: Feb. 19
Prebook: now
> Smart and compelling documentary about reconciling Christianity with homosexuality.

For a country that has been ripped apart in many ways by the debate over whether the Bible condemns homosexuality, Daniel Karslake’s documentary has a significant amount to offer. The film takes the issue out of the theoretical realm and into the personal realm by telling the stories of five American Christian families in which a member is gay or lesbian. The stories—sometimes uplifting, sometimes tragic, but always compelling—are supported by theologians and psychologists who affirm that gay and lesbian people can, and should, live in harmony with their spiritual beliefs, dealing a blow to those who use the Bible to exclude and condemn homosexuals. Karslake’s film covers an exhilarating amount of ground in 98 minutes and is entertaining, intelligent and thought-provoking, with the potential to get viewers to consider its subject matter in a new way.

Shelf Talk: During its time on the festival circuit, For the Bible Tells Me So won the hearts of critics and audiences nationwide. It will certainly appeal to the many families around the country dealing with this issue directly, but it also is a good film for those curious about this ongoing debate, as it offers an educational aspect that makes it an excellent teaching tool for churches and schools.
