New year filled with stars

The new year starts with a bang with the Jan. 1 release of Resident Evil: Extinction.

NOV. 29 | This fourth quarter has been billed as the biggest ever, with box-office hits being released on DVD every week. But studios have saved some star movies to kick off the new year.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Resident Evil: Extinction, the third in the videogame-based movie franchise, bows Jan. 1. It will be released on DVD ($28.95) and Blu-ray ($38.96), with the high-def version being the first title on that format to offer picture-in-picture.

Through distributor Warner Home Video, New Line Home Entertainment is releasing its Clive Owen actioner Shoot Em Up on the same day, also on DVD ($27.98) and Blu-ray ($35.99). An HD DVD version will be released later.

Jan. 8 brings Lionsgate’s western 3:10 to Yuma, starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe; Warner’s The Invasion starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman; and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Sunshine, starring Michelle Yeoh and Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans and directed by Danny Boyle. 3:10 to Yuma and Sunshine will be on DVD (Yuma: $29.95, Sunshine: $29.92) and Blu-ray (Yuma: $39.99, Sunshine: $39.98), and Invasion will be on DVD ($28.98) and both high-def formats ($35.99 each).

Ready for Valentine’s Day, Lionsgate’s romantic comedy Good Luck Chuck, starring Dane Cook and Jessica Alba, bows Jan. 15 on DVD ($29.95) and Blu-ray ($39.99), and Warner serves up No Reservations with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart on Feb. 12 on DVD ($28.98) and HD DVD and Blu-ray ($35.99 each).

Warner will deliver Jodie Foster actioner The Brave One on Feb. 5 at the same price points.

Then Feb. 12 brings Miramax/Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Gone Baby Gone with Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris and directed by Ben Affleck on DVD ($29.99) and Blu-ray ($34.99). And Warner’s Rendition, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep, bows on DVD ($28.98) on Feb. 19.
