Price cut makes Toshiba's HD-A2 player top seller on Amazon

By Ned Randolph -- Video Business, 8/29/2007

AUG. 29 | A $73 price cut by Amazon catapulted Toshiba's HD-A2 HD DVD player to the top of the online retailer's bestseller list of electronics.

The second-generation high-definition player is now selling for $226.88, down from $299.99, on Amazon.

Players in HD DVD format tend to cost less than their high-def competitor, Blu-ray Disc. The top selling Blu-ray player, which is not among the Top 100 sellers in Amazon’s electronics category, is Sony’s BDP-S300 1080p, which costs $473.99 but had been priced as low as $434.37 at the online retailer.

Toshiba's entry-level HD-A2 player is the lowest-priced high-def stand-alone player on the market. In the fourth quarter, however, Venturer Electronics will release a Chinese-manufactured HD DVD player priced at $199.
