AUG. 27 | After more than doubling the viewing audience of its 2006 predecessor, High School Musical 2 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on Dec. 11.
When it aired on the Disney Channel on Aug. 17, the made-for-TV sequel averaged 17.2 million viewers, making it the most watched basic cable telecast on record. It had the largest audience for any movie on any network in more than 2½ years, according to Neilson estimates.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment priced the DVD at $29.99, with Blu-ray at $34.99. Prebook is Oct. 16.
Special features include rehearsal cam footage, bloopers, music videos, sing-alongs and karaoke features.
The original High School Musical, a hit when it was released on DVD in May last year, jumped back onto the DVD sellers chart the week ended Aug. 19, according to Rentrak Retail Essentials.
The movie has attracted millions of kids and young teens, who have watched it multiple times. That, according to Disney, has helped build anticipation for its sequel to a fever-pitch.
High School Musical 2 features music, high energy dancing and a young cast whose characters are engaged in winning the “Star Dazzle Award” at the Midsummer Night's Talent Show.
The opening week of the High School Musical 2 soundtrack posted the second-highest sales week of the year with 615,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan. That places it second to Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight, which has sold more than 623,000 copies.
