Stargate extended in DVD premiere movies

SG-1 cast members return for MGM, Fox co-financed projects

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 3/14/2007

MARCH 14 | MGM and distribution partner 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment are teaming up on the made-for-DVD releases Stargate: The Arc of Truth and Stargate: Continuum.

The two companies will co-finance the projects, which begin production April 15 and May 22, respectively. DVD street dates and pricing have not yet been determined.

These titles will help extend the long-running TV series on which they are based, Stargate SG-1. (See info on DVD sets of the TV series.) The series wraps up its 10-season arc this year on the Sci Fi Channel. Stargate debuted on Showtime, before airing on Sci Fi for the last several years.

With Continuum, director Martin Wood will shoot scenes on location at the Navy’s Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station (APLIS) in the Arctic. The U.S. Navy submarine USS Alexandria (SSN-757) also will be featured. Wood has directed more than 70 Stargate TV episodes.

MGM greenlit the Stargate DVD projects in January. Both new movies include Stargate SG-1 cast members Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Claudia Black.

“We are excited to be working with the U.S. Navy on filming these epic scenes in the arduous conditions of the arctic,” said Charles Cohen, senior executive VP of finance and corporate development at MGM. “SG-1 fans will certainly enjoy these action-packed sequences, as the Stargate franchise has a rich history of unique and compelling action adventures.”
