Skin Crawl

By Ed Hulse -- Video Business, 3/12/2007

POPCINEMA/FIRST LOOK
Street: April 10, Prebook: March 13
> Gimmicks shine up this acceptable low-end horror.

This ambitious direct-to-DVD supernatural shocker about a murdered woman (Debbie Rochon) who returns from the dead seeking revenge against her scheming husband (Kevin G. Shinnick) and mistress (Julian Wells) employs a clever, narrative gambit: the repetition of a murder sequence given new context each time by interim plot revelations. First-time director Justin Wingenfeld makes the most of limited resources, and it's a better no-budget entry than most of its kind.

Shelf Talk: POPCinema's most popular actresses are all here—Debbie Rochon, Julian Wells and Misty Mundae—and their loyal following provides a core audience. There are a handful of exploitable elements, beginning with a viral campaign that includes trailers on YouTube, MySpace and MetaCafe. Additionally, a release week interview of director Wingenfeld by actress Rochon has been scheduled for Sirius' Fangoria Radio, and that should give Skin Crawl added (and needed) heft in the overcrowded market.

Horror, color, R (mature themes, strong violence, gore, nudity, sexual situations, language), 76 min., DVD $19.98
Extras: director/producer's commentary, featurette, interviews
Director: Justin Wingenfeld
First Run: DVD premiere
