Netflix nabs must-see TV exclusive

Two NBC drama pilots will be available six weeks before broadcast

By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 7/19/2006

JULY 19 | Netflix has inked a deal with NBC to offer an exclusive preview of two of the networks new TV shows more than a month before they air on TV.

Beginning Aug. 5, Netflix members will have the chance to catch a sneak peek at the pilot episode of The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkins new drama, Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip, and thriller Kidnapped six weeks before they make their network TV debuts.

Members can add the disc to their movie queue through Sept. 17. The promo DVD, created specifically for Netflix, will include the two episodes and preview trailers for the rest of the networks fall TV slate.

“This unique joint effort will generate even more early buzz for some of our hottest new dramas by letting the Netflix user get an early preview,” said NBC Universal Television chief marketing officer John Miller. “The promotion takes aim at the Netflix demographic—the rich entertainment consumer who is looking for this kind of high-end television show and then is eager to pass the word.”

NBC and Netflix will promote the DVD through network spots and highlight the offering in NBC’s 30-minute Fall Preview Show. Netflix also will advertise the disc in banner ads on its Web site and inside its red envelopes, which are used to send movies to subscribers.

“Joining forces with NBC to launch two terrific new series differentiates our service in the area of unique and original content and provides NBC with an innovative platform to promote its fall lineup,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
