Redbox kiosks in more places

Company had 1.1 million rentals in 800 locations in December

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 1/25/2006

JAN. 25 | McDonald’s subsidiary Redbox is expanding its DVD rental machines into grocers Stop & Shop and Giant Food.

By March, Redbox machines will be installed in 400 stores, representing about 80% of the two chains’ outlets.

December marked Redbox’s best transaction period yet, with 1.1 million DVD rentals across 800 locations.

Additionally in November, Redbox sold 25,000 copies of its first sell-through product, Millions of Cardinals Memories: Busch Stadium 1966-2005.

Redbox first started rolling out machines to Denver McDonald’s locations in May 2004.

“We are thrilled with the continued success of Redbox and the opportunity to build our reach in Stop & Shop and Giant stores,” Redbox CEO Gregg Kaplan said. “This is a great opportunity to introduce more consumers to the Redbox experience.”

Each Redbox DVD machine features more than 500 disc units, covering 50 to 60 of the top releases. Renters are charged $1 per night.
