Sunday Morning Shootout: The Best of Season One

By Jamie Clark -- Video Business, 1/2/2006

Delta Entertainment, color, six discs, NR, 17 hours plus supplements, stereo, fullscreen; Street: Dec. 27, $29.99; First Run: AMC, 2003

Over the past three years, Sunday Morning Shootout has found a dedicated niche audience of those who can't get enough Hollywood talk of the behind-closed-doors variety. Hosted by Peter Bart, editor-in-chief of VB sister publication Variety, and Peter Guber, chairman and CEO of Mandalay Entertainment Group, Shootout is offered in a six-disc set that gathers the first season's episodes into six sections: "The Triple Threat," with interviews with Clint Eastwood and Mel Gibson, among others; "The Directors," which includes Kevin Smith and Ron Howard; "The New Breed of Leading Men," featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Jack Black; "Women in Film," offering Charlize Theron and Laura Linney; "Executive Shuffle" housing the likes of Peter Jackson and Harvey Weinstein; and "And the Oscar Goes to," with Dustin Hoffman and Denzel Washington. As for bonus features, there's not much, but not much is needed to accompany an interview show of this nature. Fans can get an intimate look at the hosts in the 35-minute "Peter Guber, Peter Bart and the Ultimate Hollywood Shootout," which finds the two unfurling their resumes and reminiscing about their past glories. At one point, Guber explains what he feels is the appeal of the show: "[The audience is] eavesdropping on two people who are both contenders in the same space." The 15-minute "Anatomy of a Shootout: A Sneak Peak at Season Two" contains edited behind-the-scenes footage of the hosts interviewing Bruce Willis and Peter Bogdanovich. Compared to other making-of featurettes, this one is pretty laid-back and quiet. There are no talking head interviews, just caught-on-the-set footage, which is quite refreshing.
