Distributor launches Troops project

Plans to send DVDs to active military personnel

Eliza Gallo -- Video Business, 7/13/2005

JULY 13 | Peter Hargrove, president of New York-based video distributor Hargrove Entertainment, has launched a project dubbed DVDs for Our Troops to send discs to active military personnel.

"This idea really came up sitting around a family barbecue over the July 4 weekend," said Hargrove, who has several relatives in the military including some stationed in Iraq.

Hargrove said he wants to extend the care-package shipments he has been sending to a niece to other service personnel. Soldiers often have little pocket money, and what DVDs they get are eagerly passed around, he noted.

Hargrove is reaching out to fellow indie suppliers and various retailers to donate product. Four other companies have pledged to supply discs so far, he said, along with Hargrove Entertainment, whose catalog includes Spanish artfilm A Dog Called Pain.

Most of the donations are expected to consist of surplus catalog titles. DVDs for Our Troops will probably send out one or two dozen titles every two weeks, said Hargrove, who hopes to get the program approved as a nonprofit charity.
