Story Line: Troubled but intelligent teen Donnie Darko (Gyllenhaal) obeys disturbing messages from a hideously masked human-sized rabbit. Before his therapist (Ross) can stop him, Donnie becomes involved in an accidental death, time travel and murder

Bottom Line: A depressed high-school student with a gun is a tough sell in this post-Columbine, post-Sept. 11 climate, so it's not surprising that Donnie Darko brought in under a half-million dollars on 58 screens this winter despite a major advertising push. It play much better in the home market, since it has awareness and hot stars, and the gothic thriller market is one that clicks with armchair movie viewers. More thought-provoking than scary, the story has little coherency or much of a message, but that has never stopped a thriller with an aura of hipness. Push it to fans of The Crow, Urban Legends and the like for consistent early business. --Buzz McClain
