Pretty Kitty is the first of four volumes of the well-known Japanese animated children's series, featuring the popular, big-cheeked kitten and her many adventures. The phenomenon of Sanrio Company's Hello Kitty enterprise goes well beyond pencil cases and wafflemakers (don't even ask about the theme park in its native Japan). Yet, while Hello Kitty paraphernalia is a colossal hit among teenage girls worldwide, this particular incarnation will appeal only to the little people. The 9-minute episodes are about as silly as the title, but wee ones will eat up each tale of the impossibly cute, though terribly naughty Kitty and her well-behaved sister Mimmy. All eight episodes are brimming with lessons that parents will love, including the importance of washing up before dinner in Kitty's Clean Cuisine and what household objects are found in the appliance store in A Day Out With Dad. Interspersed are several "Paradise Fun and Games," which include animated activities such as Connect the Dots, Guess the Shapes, dancing clay fruit and something named "The Competition," featuring "the coolest video monster." These extra features, which are designed for very young viewers, are as cute as Kitty herself and add a somewhat kooky but delightful twist to the whole package. --Sarika Chawla
